Andrew Smith was born in the city of Liverpool, he graduated in graphic design and illustration and went onto a career in greetings cards, book illustration and book cover design. Andrew’s greetings cards have been published by high street names such as Waitrose, Sainsbury's, Boots, and Special Editions charity cards.
Now living locally in Berwick on Tweed, Andrew is inspired by the beauty of nature, local landscapes, architecture and the dramatic weather patterns. He enjoys working in all types of media, synthesising colour and mark making and experimenting with effects to evoke light and shade and abstract an emotional response to his surroundings.
Andrew’s paintings sit beautifully on the edge of abstraction and landscape. While hints of familiar places remain, which might be a horizon line, a stretch of coast, or a shifting sky, his real focus is on atmosphere, movement, and the changing quality of light.
Painted in a loose, expressive style, his work suggests rather than describes, allowing colour and mark-making to do the storytelling. We’re especially drawn to Andrew’s dramatic skies, full of energy, weather, and emotion. These are landscapes not just of place, but of feeling, capturing moments that viewers can connect with in their own way.
