Keith Webster is a ceramicist whose work bridges the gap between functional craft and sculptural art. Based in the rural beauty of Northumberland, he is the founder of Ravn Clay, a pottery studio he established in 2021 as both a creative workspace and a welcoming hub for the local community. While Ravn Clay is known for finely made mugs, dishes, and vases as well as seasonal pumpkins and Christmas trees, Keith’s most striking creations are his unique statement pieces – bold, large-scale works in hand-built glazed stoneware.

At Abstract, we are exhibiting Keith’s Igelkott series, named afterthe Swedish word for hedgehog. Each piece features his trademark “spike” motif. These spikes, individually hand-formed and meticulously glazed, create a surface alive with texture and shadow. The result is work that is both playful and formidable, inviting the viewer to experience clay not just as a vessel for use, but as an expressive, tactile sculpture.

Keith’s path into ceramics has been anything but ordinary. With a professional background in archaeology, education, bookselling, and even award-winning cheesemaking, his journey to pottery was shaped by curiosity and a deep respect for materials. Clay, with its ancient history and infinite possibilities, became the perfect medium for his creative vision.

His work has gained recognition both locally and nationally. In 2021, he was the overall winner of the Ad Gefrin Design Challenge for his “Meaningful Memento” glazed stoneware jug, a piece celebrated for its craftsmanship, environmental sustainability, and connection to Northumberland. Collaborations with Northumberland Coffee, Bamburgh Castle, and the Queen’s Tennis Club in London have further cemented his reputation as a maker of both beauty and purpose.

In this exhibition of his Igelkott series, Keith's large-scale vases, plates, and sculptural forms invite you to experience clay not just as a vessel for use, but as an expressive, tactile sculpture.
